  • When is anxiety considered normal and when is it considered a problem?

A moderate level of anxiety is a normal part of daily life. Anxiety often helps us be more focused and careful which can be useful. However, there are two instances in which anxiety can be defined as problematic:
* When anxiety causes significant emotional distress
* When anxiety adversely affects our day to day functioning

  • Who suffers from an anxiety disorders?

Research shows that at any given time some 13% of the population suffers from some form of anxiety. Additionally, some 30% of us will suffer from some form of anxiety disorder during the course of our lifetimes. These figures demonstrate just how common anxiety disorders are. Currently the view on these disorders is that they are a result of the combination of genetics and life circumstances which trigger them. Similar to heart attacks, with anxiety disorders we may be genetically predisposed but our lifestyle will determine whether or not it will become a real problem.

If the disorder is relatively mild and not acute you can try to deal with it by yourself. There are many books and websites available that can help you cope with your anxieties. If you are suffering and not getting relief it is highly recommended to turn to professional help. 

  • What treatments are available for anxiety disorders?

  • Where can one turn for help?

When turning for help it is important to seek a therapist well trained in the treatment of anxiety disorders. Many anxiety treatment centers are affiliated with hospitals. Other options include mental health centers or private practitioners.
