Trauma & Resilience:
Theory & Practice from the Israeli Experience

June 29 – July 19, 2010

This program aims to provide participants with a broad picture of the latest developments in the trauma field. Theories & research pertaining to the consequences of trauma, healthy coping processes, & possible pathological consequences will be presented. Students will learn about risks of developing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), related distress & potential protective factors. Guiding principles for clinical programs treating post-traumatic disorders will be discussed. The academic curriculum will be enriched by the following experiences:

  • Field visit to a city-wide intervention program for strengthening resilience in the civilian population in the wake of war.
  • Opportunities to practice experiential techniques for early intervention & treatment of traumatized individuals.
  • Presentation of programs that have been implemented in Israel, which are aimed at building resilience & preventing pathological consequences of trauma.

This unique program is held at the Rothberg International School of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Mount Scopus campus.

Site visits will include meetings with leading scientists & practitioners in the field of psychological trauma. The course will focus on five themes:

  • Psychological trauma: consequences & coping
  • Resilience: theoretical concepts & applications
  • Community preparedness for terrorism & disaster
  • Children & trauma: developmental & gender aspects
  • Clinical interventions

The course will include theoretical lectures, experiential teaching & site visits. Students may earn 4 academic credits from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem upon completion of the two-week course.

An optional third week of clinical training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Post-Traumatic Disorders will be conducted for clinicians who are interested in adapting their clinical skills to the trauma field. Two academic credits will be awarded upon completion of the week of clinical training.

Clinical or Educational Psychology, Neuropsychology, Social Work, Psychiatry, Counseling, Nursing, Medicine, Law, & Public Health, as well as civil servants & clergy.

Note: In order to be accepted to the program, applicants are requested to write an essay of 500 words about their personal & /or professional motivation to take this course.

Two-Week Program:
• Tuition: $1345 ($750 of this sum is to be paid directly to the Israel Center for the Treatment of Psychotrauma)
• Housing: $335
Third Week – Optional Specialty Course:
• Tuition: $500 (to be paid directly to the Israel Center for the Treatment of Psychotrauma)
• Housing: $120
Note: The tuition fee includes the mandatory non-refundable registration fee & student health insurance for the duration of the program.
