Traumatic Dissociation Workshop 2009

Treating the Spectrum of Traumatic Dissociation:
Workshop by Professor Onno van der Hart

June 30th - July 1st, 2009

The workshop, will provide an integrative framework for phase-oriented treatment of posttraumatic disorders, which emphasizes their common dissociative nature and the various phobias, which maintain these disorders.

Phase-oriented treatment represents the current standard of care, despite varied therapeutic orientations. Within this model, three treatment phases are distinguished, each of which is characterized by a combination of relational-based and problem-focused approaches. Each phase can be described in terms of overcoming specific phobias.

  • Phase I: Stabilization & Symptom Reduction
Dedicated to improving the quality of daily functioning by gradually raising the client’s integrative capacity or mental level.
  • Phase II: Treatment of Traumatic Memories
Involves gradually overcoming the phobia of traumatic memories, allowing for their integration.
  • Phase III: Personality Reintegration
Rehabilitation through overcoming the phobias of normal life, and taking on healthy risk-taking, change, and intimate relationships.

The workshop includes examples & demonstrations of essential approaches & techniques for each treatment phase using video presentations, demonstrations and experiential practical exercises.

Dissociative patients experience much shame about having “parts” and often isolate themselves and avoid sharing their personal experiences due to this shame. Therapy attempts to help them understand themselves and promotes cooperation between the different parts towards a more cohesive whole.

Participants will learn to:

  • Understand the nature of dissociation
  • Understand the role of various dissociative parts within the context of the client’s personality as a whole
  • Identify practical treatment approaches to overcoming the phobia of dissociative parts and fostering inner cooperation and problem resolution.
