The Center Staff

Prof. Danny Brom, General Director

Prof. Danny Brom is the Founding Director of the Israel Center for the Treatment of Psychotrauma of Herzog Hospital in Jerusalem. Originally from Holland, where he founded a psychotrauma center, Prof. Brom is a certified clinical psychologist . Prof. Brom is the initiator and former chairman of the Israel Trauma Coalition. As Director of the ICTP, he has brought his expertise to the fields of education, community resilience, health and mental health care to increase the capacity of Israeli society to cope with the ongoing existential threat. Prof. Brom has published numerous books and articles on Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. He published the first controlled outcome study on short term therapy for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in 1989. His latest book, "The Trauma of Terrorism: Sharing Knowledge and Shared Care, an International Handbook", was launched at the UN in 2005.  Prof. Brom gave a congressional briefing hosted by Senator Hilary Clinton about the effects of terrorism and trauma. His main effort goes to bridging the gap between scientific data and the development of service provision in the community. 

Training Unit

Gafnit Aghassy, M.A., Director of Training

Gafnit was trained as a clinical psychologist with a Master's degree from the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. A specialist and trainer in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, she has received advanced training in both EMDR and SE. Gafnit has written several articles and a book on the topic of trauma and sexual abuse. She was part of the research staff of Amcha. 

Resilience Unit

Dr. Naomi Baum, Director Resilience Unit

Naomi is currently the director of the Resilience Unit and the National School Resilience Project. Her work at the ICTP focuses on developing programs to build resilience in communities that have been highly exposed to trauma and stress.  Her innovative work has been implemented in the school system in Israel, with the police, firefighters and paramedics. She has successfully brought her innovative approach to Biloxi, MS, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.  Previously Naomi was a fellow at the Mandel School for Educational Leadership, and was the director of psychological services for a large, rural school district. She has been a consulting psychologist for elementary, junior highs, high schools and pre-schools for over twenty years. She has also taught psychology at several colleges and universities, both in the United States and in Israel. Dr. Baum received her undergraduate training at Bar-Ilan University in psychology, and completed her Master's degree in school psychology and her Ph.D. in counseling and child development at Bryn Mawr College. While she has accrued many degrees and much work experience, her real understanding of kids and families comes from being married to the same man for over 30 years and raising, with him, their seven children. Dr. Baum, a native of the USA, moved to Israel in 1987.

Joel Wardi, M.A., Director of Clinical Services

Joel is a clinical psychologist with extensive experience working with trauma victims. He began his career as a clinical psychologist for the Israeli army working with victims of battle shock, and continued to work in the Ministry of Defense, and later for Social Security. In addition to his work at the Center, he works with Holocaust survivors and their children, within the framework of Amcha. Yoel has completed advanced training in hypno-therapy, SE and EMDR.

Ruth Pat-Horenczyk, Ph.D., Director Children and Adolescent

Ruth is a clinical psychologist who received her PhD from the Hebrew University. She completed her post-doctoral training at the University of California in San Diego. Subsequently she was involved in clinical research and teaching in several areas of behavioral medicine such as sleep and eating disorders. Currently she is the Director of the Child and Adolescent Clinical Services at Herzog Hospital’s Israel Center for the Treatment of Psychotrauma in Jerusalem, Israel. In addition, she is a lecturer in the School of Social Work at the Hebrew University. In the last few years she has been conducting a nation-wide screening project aimed at identification of posttraumatic distress among children and adolescents and provision of school-based group interventions for those in need.. Dr. Pat-Horenczyk has published a variety of articles and contributed several book chapters in the field of child trauma and has appeared at numerous international conferences to present her clinical work and research findings. Recently, she has co-edited the book "Treatment of Traumatized Children: Risk, Resilience and Recovery" which was published by Routledge in 2009.

Ethiopian Community Project

Asher Rahamim, Coordinator of Services for the Ethiopian community

Born in Ethiopia, Asher walked to Israel at the age of thirteen. Witnessing the trauma's that occurred during the years of this journey, Asher decided that his life's goal was to work with people in need. Finishing his compulsory army service in the Israel Air Force, as head of the Firefighters team, he began his professional career developing absorption programs for new immigrants from the USSR and Ethiopia. Asher is now leading the development of trauma treatment for Ethiopian immigrants at the ICTP. Asher is the Year 2007  recipient of an award from the Recanati, Chase, Rashi Foundation for "entrepreneurial social worker". He recently was instrumental in establishing a library for economically disadvantaged children.
